Every roof has a lifespan, and for those in older properties where roofing has deteriorated or conducting new build projects such as extensions, there are lots of upgrades available.
Do you need a new roof? Modern roofing materials offer some incredible benefits to property owners, including increased energy efficiency, weatherproofing and beautiful aesthetics. Two of the most popular options when it comes to new flat roofs are EPDM rubber and GRP fibreglass.
Here’s everything you need to know.
What are the benefits of EPDM rubber roofing?
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a type of rubber roofing used for flat roofs, consisting of a single-ply membrane applied in one piece. This results in a fast roofing installation with no joints or leaks, leaving a waterproof roof.
As it’s applied as a flexible material, EPDM is often chosen for areas such as garages, dormer windows and property extensions that may have lots of uneven surfaces and awkward angles to cover, such as the roof area surrounding skylights.
Rubber roofs are extremely robust, resisting extreme temperatures and UV radiation with a life expectancy of up to fifty years. Ask your roofer about the rubber roofing brand they use so that you can look up some of the specific benefits of the product.
What are the benefits of GRP fibreglass roofs?
GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) fibreglass is one of the most state of the art roofing materials on the market. It contains small glass fibres and a resin layer that provide extra strength, meaning it’s often used for flat roofing areas you may walk on, such as balconies or upper floor terraces.
Fibreglass is one of the most common types of liquid roofing, applied cold and covering the entire surface for an evenly spread, seamless finish. This does mean that weather conditions need to be right for its application, as wet weather wouldn’t be suitable for applying a liquid roof.
However, if conditions are dry, GRP fibreglass roofs are quick and easy to install, leaving a strong, waterproof membrane that lasts the test of time.
Is felt still used for flat roofs?
Absolutely! While felt roofing is sometimes seen as a more traditional option for flat roofs, you can get some really high-performance materials to meet your roofing needs. This includes three-layer felt roofing that’s more cost-effective than other materials, so it’s a great option if you’re replacing something like a garage roof.
If you’ve noticed your old felt roofing has torn, deteriorated, or you’re experiencing property leaks, ask your local roofer about modern bitumen roofs. You can even choose coloured roofing for different aesthetical effects.
