When thinking about how long new roofs last, it’s helpful to know modern roofing materials are some of the most superior on the market. However, maintenance is key, so ensuring you prolong the lifespan of your roof with good upkeep is essential. In each season, there are key tasks you should complete to ensure the health of your roof.
Here are some of our top tips for how to spring clean your roof.
Clean your gutters
The harsh winter weather can leave your gutters clogged with anything from leaves and twigs to dirt, animal droppings and stones. This can leave your gutters vulnerable to issues such as overflowing rainwater and sagging (due to the extra weight). Once the debris has been cleared, your guttering should effectively drain rainwater from your property, so always keep an eye out for problems like waterlogged earth and watermarks down the side of your house if this hasn’t been resolved.
Mend loose or damaged roof tiles
Harsh conditions can play havoc with the stability of your roof tiles and slates. If you see any gaps in the formation of the tiles look out of alignment, it’s important to get them looked at as soon as possible. At the start of spring, take note of any signs your tiles have come loose, and let your roofer know. Hopefully, they will be able to fix any issues easily, keeping your roof repair costs to a minimum.
Check your attic
As the warmer weather approaches, if it’s safe to do so, head up into your loft or attic to look for signs of storm damage. Are there any damp patches or mould forming? Can you see light shining through into your attic space? Are there birds nesting in your loft? These indicate there are problems with your roof, and you’ll want to resolve them before more costly damage occurs, such as property leaks. When scheduling a roofing inspection, ask your contractor to check inside your loft (as well as your external roof) if you’d rather they check it for you.
Book a professional spring roof inspection
Regularly inspecting your roof can stop issues from becoming bigger, saving you money on repair costs. Hiring a professional roofing contractor is key, as they will be able to spot the signs of problems quickly, easily and safely. The spring is the perfect time to book another inspection, as your roofing has been exposed to harsh weather during the winter, including frost, ice, strong winds and heavy rainfall. For example, old tiles may have cracked, debris could have landed in your guttering, and there may be signs of moss growth appearing.
